Day 26 – A Book Turned Movie and Completely Desecrated

I knew as soon as I saw this prompt what I was going to choose for this prompt.

Usually I enjoy adaptations. I mean, the book is usually still better but it’s aways nice to see your favourite works of fiction take flesh, so long as the creators actually follow the book.

The movie I had in mind, the book turned movie that was completely desecrated was City of Bones, first book in the Mortal Instruments series, by Cassandra Clare.

When it was announced that City of Bones was going to be made into a film I was so excited. Author, Cassandra Clare, said that production was going well and that gave me such hope because if the author wasn’t happy with the movie adaption then surely she would say something, right?

City of Bones was one of the worst adaptions I’ve ever had to sit through. I had tickets booked for the first showing at our local cinema. I made a date of it and took my then-boyfriend (who really wasn’t interested in the film but came along with me anyway). I was going to see Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower and Jonathan Rhys Meyers on the big screen acting in one of my most beloved fantasy series. I could hardly wait.

And then it all went to hell.

They poked so many holes in the plot line that they made it impossible to continue with City of Ashes because they changed how the book ends. Valentine was supposed to get the Mortal Cup but instead he doesn’t because they switch it out for a fake one? No, that doesn’t work because it’s vital to book two (AND THE REST OF THE SERIES) that Valentine has the cup. So why change it? Also demons can’t come on hallowed ground so how did they manage to release demons into the Institute? I think not.

Perhaps if I hadn’t read the book prior to seeing it I might have enjoyed the movie. In that sense it wasn’t a bad film. And I can’t fault the actors because I thought most of them portrayed their characters well. But jeez. City of Ashes didn’t even make it to production and the reign of terror ended there.

Until nexflix released Shadowhunters that is non-canon that I can’t make it past season 2.

Please stop butchering book adaptations xoxo.

Until tomorrow.
