Day 22 – A Book That Reminds You of Home

Books invoke emotions in us. They invoke feelings and thoughts and imagination. That’s part of what we love about them, right? Because they allow us to be someplace we’re not and feel things we might otherwise not have felt.

They can make you think of home without even meaning to.

A book that makes me think of home is The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, Wayfarer series, by Becky Chambers.

Its about space, or at least it’s set in space, on the Wayfarer ship. And strangely enough space makes me think of home.

When I say that I’m not implying that home for me is lightyears away. What I mean is that my fiancé loves space, the universe and everything it holds. He is fascinated by the planets and rockets, space travel and moon dust. For an engagement gift I got him the replica Lego Saturn V model and for fathers day he got the Lego Lunar Lander model. Space is very much a part of who he is. So when I think of space, I think of him.

And when I think of him I think of home.

The Wayfarer series by Becky Chambers is one of my favourite Science Fiction series. It’s lighthearted and looks at building trust, learning to love and finding a family where you thought you would not. It follows the journey of Rosemary, the Wayfarer and its chaotic crew. Setting off on the job of a life time, things become increasingly more dangerous and the crew need to learn how to rely on each other if they’ve any chance of surviving the journey across the stars.

The characters are excellent and the book is very much character driven. It doesn’t focus on one person’s journey but instead focuses on the crew on a ship. The characters are all unique in their own way but in an anti-prejudice way. It’s not written in a way that we are expected to hate people. Instead it’s a refreshing way to look at things.

The story is bursting with diversity and its truly beautiful.

It’s a different perspective on the universe and each page of the book is so filled with love that you’re heart is full to bursting by the final pages. I love this book, this series. This is why this particular book makes me think of home because I found love among the stars.

Until tomorrow.
