Summer Blog Challenge – Day 19

Day 19 – A Book That Disappointed You

Its not often that I’m not pleased with a book and I can’t say that there are a lot of books I’ve felt disappointed by.

A book that I was disappointed by was If I Stay by Gayle Forman.

I wasn’t just disappointed by this book, I hated it but disappointment was definitely the overriding emotion.

This book had such a hype around it when the movie was released, so many of my friends had read it and loved it so I was excited to get started.

It’s cheesy. It’s cringey. It was embarrassing to read.

I want you to play me like a cello.

The idea was there for it to be a heart wrenching book but it just didn’t deliver. I really would have loved it had it been written better and utilising a great idea for a plot line for a contemporary, fantasy novel. There were so many strong themes trying to be covered but just didn’t deliver.

The long and short of the story is that Mua is in a car accident that leaves her near dead and she has an out of body phenomenon and has to choose between letting go or living. But really, there was no real plot to the book at all and most of the book if just get recounting things that have happened in Mia’s life. It doesn’t run together well, the memories are just a scattered mess.

The characters are dull, they aren’t relatable and really they are just boring.

The ‘romance’ of the story isn’t much of a romance either. Adam is a bit of a douche and I really don’t see why the two fell for each other in the first place.

Then I smell the sweat on him, a clean musky scent that I’d bottle and wear as perfume if I could.

I wasn’t sad (and I expected to be), this book irritated me more than anything else.

The physical books that I own are very important to me and I keep all the books that I buy or am given. Except this book. I got rid of this book, donated it to a charity shop so I didn’t need to be burdened by it. Maybe it could find a new home with someone who would appreciate it because I certainly am not that person.

(sorry this is ugh… 50 minutes late. I’ve been driving all day and my little girl has been so grumpy because she’s been stuck in a car seat).

Until tomorrow.
