Summer Blog Challenge – Day 7

Day 7 – Favourite Book Couple

I love romance in books. I love heavy romance in books and don’t object if it’s heavily explicit. In fact, I’m often disappointed if there isn’t some kind of romance in the book that I’m reading. But, as usual, choosing just one couple was hard though I’m happy with my choice. They are the reason I reread the series as often as I do.

My favourite book couple is Penryn and Raffe from the Penryn and the End of Days trilogy by Susan E. E.

I’ve reread this series over and over again for two reasons. The first is that I love stories where the world is facing total annihilation which this series features and I also love the relationship dynamics between Penryn and Raffe. Raffe is a fallen angel and Penryn is a human girl fighting for her life and her family in the World After. The World After the angels decide to bring about the apocalypse.

After Penryn saves Raffe and the two strike up a tentative pact to save Penryns sister and get Raffe’s wings reattached, they set off together and all the wit and sarcasm ensues. They rub against each other’s personalities, poking and teasing each other with sharp remarks. But as they travel together and stare danger in the face, a relationship starts to bud. Of course, it is forbidden for an angel to love or lie with a Daughter of Man but so many rules, of course, they are going to get broken.

And as the series progresses so does their forbidden relationship. I wish there was more detail than there is but I’ll take what I can get.

It is not the gentle kiss of a couple on a first date, nor is it the kiss of a man driven by simple lust. He kisses me with the desperation of a dying man who believes the magic of eternal life is in this kiss.

It’s very much an enemies to lovers type of relationship, with the two being on opposite sides of a war. But trust can bloom in the darkest of times and love can sometimes be enough to blind even the most devout.

Honourable mentions;

  • Island Chaptal and March from Camilla Monk’s Spotless Series.
  • Vivian and Kallias from Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns of Roses series.
  • The Copper Cat/Wydrin and Lord Aaron Frith from Jen Williams’ The Copper Cat trilogy
  • Aedion and Lysandra from Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass Series.
  • Alina Starkov and the Darkling from Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone trilogy (Grishaverse)

Until tomorrow.
